Articulate and witty article written by K-lynn Smith and Sarah Zielinski for Scientific American. Well worth my time, and any chicken fanciers time to read and share. We could learn a lot from the red jungle fowl. "Chickens are smart, and they understand their world, which raises troubling questions about how they are treated on factory farms." We are taking time off for the holidays to spend with family and friends. Enjoy the time with those you love. Remember the reason for the season.
Hope to see you at the end of year sale at Roddick's! There will be huge savings, a hot dog bbq hosted by the DRC, as well as Otter Co-op will have a nutritionist on hand to answer any questions you may have about feeding your chickens properly!! See you there!! In BC we are fortunate to have some of the best chicken doctors in the world right here at the Ministry of Agriculture. Not to mention that we have a chicken marketing board that affords us small-timers the luxury of a 4 day poultry health class. It doesn't matter if you are advanced, beginner, or have a backyard flock. Everyone can ask questions and learn in a relaxed setting. You will learn basics such as how an egg is made or how to implement your bio security plan. Remember, an ounce of prevention works so much better than a pound of antibiotics. It's a lot easier on the birds too! Sign up now, its free to attend this Chicken University!! Due to limited seating, if you aren't able to attend all 4 classes please sign up at another date. Don't chicken out after the first one...Show us that you're a graduate and a capable chicken parent and receive 5.00 chick cash at Grade Eh Farms online store! What an amazing new addition to the flock! One word, Malines. Proud to say that we are one of the few blessed with these fat and happy birds. Just the other day I was in the coops visiting with the birds. I picked up a hen and held her against my chest to reposition my hold on her as I inspected for any fowl play. Surprisingly she nuzzled her face up against me and held it there as if she was listening to my heartbeat. I enjoy moments like that, even amidst all the crowing and birds pecking the hair off my legs. Makes me thankful, even on the worse day of being a chicken farmer. These birds are extremely docile and enjoy getting free on the farm. Even the roosters are quiet and respectful with the odd soft crow from time to time. They are equally content relaxing on the floor of the coop or lower perches given they have plenty of wiggle room to play. At hatch, they are larger than any breed we have encountered, and they do it with veracity. Even when upside down breech in the egg they hatch with no assistance. Its a blur of shells flying, swear words and peeps as they finally break free! They are double the size of most breeds due to the XXL egg and the nature of the breed. They make up for the large volume of food they consume with an egg double the size of any store bought! The males at 10 weeks under optimal conditions can weigh up to 4 kilogrammmmms. They have the wonderful auto sexing feature as you can tell by the picture to the left. Can you guess how many hens are in the photo? Ill give you a hint. They aren't the lighter coloured ones. These were used by Dr. Roth in the creation of the equally great (but smaller) Bielefelder chicken. Also rumoured to play a part in the genetics too that gave way to the creation of the loved favorelle breed. This is the ultimate free range utility bird and equally suitable for backyarders and children due to their calm demeanor. They breed true, no funky genetics here. Only rare and heritage chickens need apply here. The feathered legs are a groovy bonus. Being a child of the 70's I keep thinking I've been transported back to a youthful place in time with all of these bellbottom chickens running around. Spring wait will fill up fast. Reserve your place in the queue. Price is not available at this time. We are currently gearing up for fall environmental testing as well as serology to assure you some of the healthiest free range birds in Canada. These have been a well kept secret in Canada for many years and what I would consider a local breed due to the strong Belgian influence for birds that are reminiscent of home. To my knowledge there are few breeders in Canada and fewer with a flock large enough for a good genetic program. Our goal is to keep these birds going and find more homes that will enjoy them as we do. We do not ship to the USA. We ship Canada wide. Mostly eggs. If you would like these birds in the USA please submit a request to Greenfire Farms to import unrelated lines as they search the world in their travels for some of the greatest chickens on earth. And remember, buy from people that monitor the health status of their flock and meet the minimal equivalent of the US National poultry improvement plan. Its easy and inexpensive to test in Canada. Here is a good link. http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/ahc/ Preserve your investment for future generations! After days of investigation and an all point bulletin, they were located. The lost ducks are actually hiding in the back field on mountains of eggs disguised as angry incubators. I found one stuck next to the fence. or so I thought. I went to help and in return she attacked me for my kind deed. Still suffering from post traumatic stress from my childhood and the encounters with my great grandmothers geese has turned me into a cautious duck owner and an honorary member of the boycott geese club. (Un Canadian, I know........I'm a work in progress.) We have room for more, so bring on those fuzzy waddling poop machines. Not anticipating the additional work they create, but who can resist. Whilst on the subject, we want to stress if you don't have room for additional creatures, don't let your chicken addiction get the best of you. If you cant care for them properly, we would prefer they go to a home that can. If you have questions feel free to contact us any time. Just wanted to take the time to say thanks for the tremendous outpouring of love and support within the chicken community! Well done! And so are Grade Eh chickens, mmmmmmm! Thanks for being part of our small farm family... Aside from farming, I hold a Canadian Red Seal Plumbing license and have participated in every aspect of the industry for longer than I care to admit. If you are local to Vancouver, we recently partnered with a plumbing company and are actively seeking plumbing projects. Or if you have a plumbing/chicken related question I’ll give you my 2 cents. If we had pennies... Sincerely, Farmer |
